William A. Darity, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Economics and Sociology is engaged in the investigation of a variety of dimensions of economic inequality -- between persons, races, ethnic groups, regions, and nations. His most recent research involves the development of the subfield of stratification economics; specific areas of interest include cross-national comparisons of patterns of intergroup inequality and the consequences of such disparities for economic growth, the size distribution of income, and ethnic and racial tension. With funding from the National Science Foundation, in conjunction with Darrick Hamilton and Arthur Goldsmith, he has undertaken a major project on the effects of skin shade on labor market outcomes, marriage markets and workplace dynamics using the National Survey of Black Americans , the Multi-City Study of Urban Inequality, and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. With former CPC postdoc Ashwini Deshpande and Thomas Weisskopf he is undertaking a theoretical project on the relative effectiveness of using race or social class as eligibility criteria for affirmative action programs, using the cases of the USA and India as central examples. exploring patterns of caste inequality in India. His recent published work includes editorship of the most recent edition of the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (2008) as well as publications in the Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Socioeconomics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, American Sociological Review, and Social Forces. Darity also continues to engage in collaborative work with economists Rhonda Sharpe and Omari Swinton on obstacles to achieving diversity in the academy with support from the Ford Foundation, and he is developing a new project analyzing and critiquing the concept of post traumatic slavery syndrome or disorder. Darity holds a primary appointment as Arts and Sciences Professor of Public Policy Studies, African and African American Studies and Economics at Duke University.
