John Kasarda directs the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. His research focuses on airport development and its impact on urbanization, business competitiveness and job creation. He also researches urbanization and its relationship to development and economic variables. He evaluates transportation infrastructure and business location in developed and developing countries and is an international advisor on firm location and the aviation industry. Kasarda initiated a $10-million grant from USAID to use U.S.-Thailand business linkages to transfer U.S. technology and expertise to Thailand in the areas of the environment, public health, human resource development, and HIV/AIDS. He is founding trustee of the Kenan Institute Asia in Bangkok, a seventy-person Thai registered organization that serves as the successor to USAID in Thailand, which received an $11-million endowment from the U.S. government, Royal Thai government, and the Kenan Trust. Kasarda is also active in research on the economic future of cities and the off-shoring of U.S. blue-collar and white-collar jobs. He teaches a course in business demographics at the business school.
