Ashu Handa is a human resource economist in the Department of Public Policy. He conducts research on household economic and demographic behavior in developing countries, with particular interests in the role of demand side factors (particularly parental education), supply side factors (infrastructure) and their interaction in determining children’s schooling and health outcomes, household behavioral responses to exogenous shocks (such as macroeconomic crisis) and their impact on children’s welfare, and the optimal design of poverty alleviation programs. One of his current research projects looks at the performance of propensity score matching as an impact evaluation technique. Another project use data from Mexico’s Progresa’s program to compare the effects of Progresa and Procampo (an agricultural production subsidy) on household behavior and children’s human capital investment.
