William Kalsbeek is the Director the Biostatistics Survey Research Unit and applies sampling and survey methods to the study of health and population in developing countries. His recent research has dealt with cost-efficiency in survey design and with sampling elusive populations. He has designed samples for demographic surveys in Indonesia, Honduras, Jordan, and Somalia and helped design the Puerto Rico Fertility and Family Planning Survey and the Second Egypt Contraceptive Prevalence Survey. Kalsbeek is examining problems in sampling nomadic populations, such as those in East Africa and U.S. migrant workers, and is developing methods to monitor mortality risks. He designed a household sample for the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey on economic well-being and health. He is a sampling consultant to the Centers for Disease Control, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, and the National Center for Health Statistics. He is a member of the Committee on National Statistics and a National Academy of Sciences panel dealing with research into proposed changes in the disability determination process for the Social Security Administration. He also serves on a National Academy of Sciences panel on methods for the 2010 Census. He is on the U.S. Bureau of the Census Advisory Committee on the Survey of Income and Program Participation. In 1997, he was elected a fellow of the American Statistical Association. Kalsbeek has taught sampling theory and methods; design and analysis of case studies; and introductory survey sampling. |
